What an alcitrón is
An alcitrón is a piece of chiberro, a squash-like fruit and a type of chilacayote, candied in sugar. Honduran recipes boil the pieces in syrup, leave them to rest, heat them again until the syrup thickens, and then drain them.
Where to find them
The sweet is most closely tied to Siguatepeque, in the department of Comayagua, where shops still sell it and small producers make it by hand.
From the sweet to the mail service
Alcitron Mail is an email service for businesses, and it has nothing to do with confectionery. It carries the name of the Honduran sweet, written without the accent: alcitron.com.
Why a sweet for a mail service
A short, uncommon word is easy to say on the phone and hard to confuse in an address, which matters for a service whose product is addresses.
How to say it
Al-see-TRON, with the weight on the last syllable. In Spanish it carries an accent on the o: alcitrón. An email address leaves the accent out, which is why the domain reads alcitron.
